Engine-O G12, Tune Up!

I finally got the time to form Engine-O G12 today!

One word to describe: It's a MONSTER!

I simply cannot imagine the monstrosity of the whole combined weight! Yes, including the Engine Souls, with the exception of Buson and BearRV whose are candy versions. Still, the sheer magnificence of the whole robo presented in front of me is truly one of a kind and intimidating in every possible way.

To a more practical point of view, this block of plastic is immobile. You almost cannot move it in any way nor play with it; it's effectively a display piece. A pity, though... And also, I really think it is not advisable to leave the Engine Souls in the mecha because of the extra weight and pressure on all the joints. I doubt Speedor's arm joints can last that much of a lifetime.

Before I forgot, this has a price tag of S$463.00 (o_0)

Insufficient Funds...!

Engine Sentai Go-Onger!

The Yet-Another-Experimental 2008 Super Sentai Series has so far been extremely successful with its superb "marketing" strategies. In an effort to recoup massive losses of last year's experimental series "Jyuken Sentai Gekiranger" which focused on martial arts resulting in more than 25-billion yen sales decline, Toei and Bandai are determined to attack in all directions on consumers?!

1) Plot

So far, the nature of the series is random and heavily episodic, with almost no plot-driven elements, which means the audience had no idea of how the story is heading or ending... In one episode, you can get some monster kidnapping people who can spin their pens very well (Huh?), and the next, you can get some lame and weak straw monster who constantly needs to drink from potions in order to attack?! Reacting to which, you can expect a new weapon, or mecha every few episodes, and now more recently the Ancient Engines (10-12).

The villains haven't really done anything constructive so far, and are not very bright to begin with. We have yet to see some brilliant or spectacular plans to defeat the heroes...

2) Engine Souls

I have probably mentioned this a million times. Bandai is driving collectors mad with all the Engine Souls, which they made tremendous effort in making sure one of those things get packaged with a weapon or mecha. Japanese Kids will probably have to beg their parents to buy everything in the department stores. Well, you think it is all? Nope, there are a couple of exclusive Engine Souls which you have to go through some events or lucky draws to win it... and not to forget the Music Soul which is included in the Limited Edition of the Opening Theme Single!

I am not yet done! More variants of Engine Souls are put out by Bandai in its Candy Toy and Gashapon (Capsule Toy) Product Lines. Each spotting yet another different sound from the mainstream "Deluxe" ones and even the more recent Candy Toy only designs.

When will it ever end?

3) Opening Themes and Ending Themes

As mentioned, the first successful soundtrack of the franchise to reach the top charts of Oricon peaking at #2 (the Japanese Equivalent of Billboard), which was a major feat!

Ok, all nonsensical-trash put out by Toei, the Ending Theme was probably remixed to its maximum potential. At first, I felt that it was really creativity, but soon realised it was otherwise; around 10 songs of the same tune with different lyrics? There's the Engine Raps (x4), Eco-Rap, Hero Rap, Movie Rap, G3 Princess Rap, G5 Prince Rap, Winning Rap etc...

Speaking of the G-3 Princesses {comprises Saki (Go-OnYellow), Miu (Go-OnSilver), and Kegalesia (Female Villain)}, more marketing opportunities. Soundtracks, photo albums and even dolls to accompany these kawaii girls in pink dresses and cute makeup... enough to drive fan-boys to insanity...

4) Concepts and Designs

Definitely first of its kind, we get hybrid animal-vehicle mecha who can talk and make use of the Engine Soul concept. What came out best of the series, was that the mecha (toys) can all combine to form one big block/chunk of plastic?

This would almost definitely means that consumers are persuaded to buy all 12 Engines that appeared in the show, "Wow, I really want that massive Engine-O G12!"

Clearly, these concepts are more experimental and trying to appeal to the kids which apparently the Geki-Beasts of last year failed to do so.

Bandai is certainly blooming with business and smiles. Based on the Engine Cast and Engine Soul Concept, it is justified to market and promote their products individually, resulting in a higher price point for the items than the average combined. Say, a Toy Robo is on average around S$85 in a series, we now get 2 out of 4 Robos (Gunbir-O and Seikuu-Oh) above the S$100 price mark, adding up to about S$110 and S$135 respectively.

That is not all, the Engines have holographic "cartoon" versions of themselves in the show and it inevitably led to more marketing opportunities, like keychains and the most recent Nakayoshi Engines which are Vinyl Plushes. I have to admit that they are very cute indeed.

Not to forget, how about storing cases for the mecha? Bandai Executives are probably saying, "Yeah! Let's make storing cases for these Engine Casts so that kids can store and carry them on the go!"

At this point, I think I pointed out at least half a dozen of viable marketing tactics due to the direction and design concepts that the series allowed for.

5) Cutting Costs and Quality

More evident than the previous year, Bandai Japan is pretty obvious in the area of cutting costs and quality for more profits.

One perfect example is the Sentai Hero Figures: Prices are raised by another 100 yen (to 800 yen), and the toys lost more paint, detachable weapons, and even to the extent of boxes!

As a collector, I find offense in missing paint for DX Mecha. I mean, it is perfectly reasonable to have some missing paint in the less-noticed areas, but to scrimp on gold paint for DX Carrigator's Number 6 Emblem? Come on, it is totally unjustifiable...

To the last portion, as well, as to round up the conclusion. Toei and Bandai have certainly reached some levels of success with Go-Onger. Bandai has diversified its product ranges to cover a wider range of consumers and to attract people to buy more than usual for more inter-playability. On the other hand, Toei managed to reinvent itself in the 32-year old franchise and picked up from the unpopular series last year, which could potentially result in the decline of Super Sentai.

Enough of my ranting; the series has at least earned an estimated value of S$800 or more from me at present.

Power Rangers RPM Confirmed

Power Rangers RPM, the 17th season of the kids live-action series franchise, is confirmed! Two of its action figure toys were spotted exceptionally early on ebay.

Filming for the show will start next month, and casting is undergoing along with a few rumors and fan speculations here and there.

**So far the only picture

From the picture, the toys looked legitimate.

It seems that the logo is a direct clone of the Japanese Counterpart. Say a well-blend of Turbo, a little of Ninja Storm (the font) and the racing motif. So far, they looked pretty sweet and true to the show.

We can also roughly make out that the figures have their in-show weapons and accessories, as well as the Engine Casts. Judging from the names of Eagle and Lion Rangers, it seems that Condor is dropped and replaced with Eagle (which is typical for America).

So far, this is shaping up to be the best action figure line put up by Bandai America. However, these are only 2 figures and we are not sure of the arrangements with the Engine Souls and the Deluxe Megazords.

On a side note, Bandai Japan's Sentai Hero Line really pales in comparison with these ones, for the lack of detachable weapons, articulation and maybe some paint.

Go-Onger Vs. Mystic Force

It's been a while since I went to CSC, and there's really nothing much... except that I am abit tempted to get the DX Abarenoh. Except that it's priced at S$170 which is abit steep for a Bandai Hong Kong Version.

Go-Onger! Win!

Go-Onger continues to be a hot-favorite series, with toys forever flying off the shelves. At present, DX Engine JumBo-Whale is still low on stock all around the world! Isn't it abit exaggerating? You have to believe it though... Uncle Ng had to resort to getting some of the toys from the Japanese Retail Stores directly, because suppliers are constantly out of stock! Wow, cannot imagine the price tag of S$89.90 at Ng's Collection now... Luckily, I bought mine pretty early. Hahah.

Here's the stock currently at Ng's Collections:

-DX Engine-O x1
-DX Engine Birca x5
-DX Engine Gunpherd *SOLD OUT*
-DX Engine Carrygator x1
-DX Engine Toripter *SOLD OUT*
-DX Engine Jetras *SOLD OUT*
-DX Engine JumBoWhale x2

Mystic Force Clearance @ OG

Is this some kind of marketing strategy?

OG is clearing DX Solar Streak Megazord at S$69.95 and related Solaris Knight merchandise not available elsewhere. Kinda like store exclusives, right? LoL~ BHG is like a total loser! (Takashimaya cleared DX Wolkaiser at S$35 earlier on...)

Mystic Force Clearance

Kiddy Palace has started to clear DX Titan Megazord at S$69.95 (Usual Price @ S$129.95)

This has got to be the worst selling season of Power Rangers so far! Come on, Titan Megazord is the Primary Megazord of the core five, and Primary Megazords tend to be sold out by the end of the season (at least for the last couple of seasons).

Well, someone has to admit that the prices of Deluxe Megazords for this season are incredibly outrageous! Compare price to quality, and you will get what I mean.

On a side note, none of the other Mystic Force toys are selling at all... Figures, Bikes, Playsets, you name it.

Addicted...

Recently, I am addicted to the song "What Planet" sang by Jason Smith. However, I couldn't find any related information on this single at all. Haha, I am not sure if he is going to become a singer because he only has 2 songs (the other being "Celebrity") so far.

Gekiranger: A Failure?

Just came across this when I was browsing Wikipedia (Japanese):

As depicted, Geki-Merchandise failed to reach a 100 Billion Yen Target set, with only sales of 75 Billion Yen. Sales Target is actually based on the respective TV ratings, so it's not a comparison with previous years.

No wonder people on the forums were discussing along similar lines some time ago. Then, the "Evil Bandai Japan Marketing Executive" came about. So the entire story ended up in "Let's put an Engine Soul with every item, so that the kids have to buy everything to complete the Souls!"

Honestly, I didn't know that Gekiranger Merchandise fared so badly in terms of sales. Granted that TV ratings are dropping every year, toy sales somewhat are consistent.

Now come to think of it, the only popular items for Gekiranger are the Deluxe Mecha (except the 3 Auxiliary Elephant, Bat and Shark), the Sentai Hero Figures, and the GekiChangers. Weapons suffered the greatest losses, like GekiBazooka, Super GekiClaw and SaiBlade; play-ability is kinda limited due to the "Ki" and Martial Arts motif.

I am very excited about how well will Go-Onger do this time round, seeing how it has caused a hype in Japan and overseas. *Anticipating*

The Overwhelming Success of Engine Sentai Go-Onger

Engine Sentai Go-Onger is fast becoming the most popular Super Sentai Series in recent years! Thanks to the awesome marketing strategy employed by Bandai Japan, toys are selling like hot cakes, with both kids and fans alike...

Opening/Ending Theme Single

It is the first Super Sentai Soundtrack to reach the Top 10 spot in the Japanese Oricon Chart (Singles) and stayed in Top 50 for several weeks. Quite a feat already!

Engine Soul Marketing Campaign

This is the most ridiculous collection to follow as consumers, but an excellent one for Bandai Japan. *More Money* There are like a million different types of Limited Edition Bonus Engine Souls, in addition to the regular ones which comes in many versions (Deluxe, Candy Toy and Gashapons) as well... In other words, you need to collect 3 different Engine Souls for Speedor alone!

Fans already spent big bucks buying useless (when I say useless, it's because these deluxe weapons are of the size fit for a 5-year old only) weapons just for the Engine Souls that comes with them.

China Square Central

CSC is severely low in stock for Go-Onger Toys; even Japanese Suppliers are out of stock themselves. For Ng's Collections, you can only expect to see some Go-Phones and Holders, and maybe one or two DX Birca; nothing else. All DX Engine-O, DX Gunpherd and Mantan Gun are sold out.

The Uncle told me that he had a hard time trying to get any stock from Japan, and hopes to source from Bandai Asia via Sheng Tai Toys this time. This is the reason why DX Carrigator is not even in Singapore yet, especially because of the Bonus G6 Engine Soul that comes with the limited first press.

Auxiliary Mecha

Last year with Gekiranger, Auxiliary Mecha piled up on shelves as they were less appealing. You can still get your DX GekiElephant, GekiBat, GekiShark, and GekiWolf which are plenty at CSC. Only DX GekiFire, and DX Saidaioh were popular and sold out quickly.

For Boukenger, DX GoGo Drill and Shovel were more popular than Mixer and Crane. DX DaiBouken, and DX DaiVoyager were the popular ones that sold out quickly.

For Go-Onger, it seems that everything is popular and sold out almost immediately... so I can't wait for the Go-Onger Auxiliary Mecha to reach clearance prices like Geki Auxiliary Mecha did, or else I will miss the chances to get them... *Engine Souls again*

As you can see, Go-Onger is really very successful in Japan despite the funny (non-conventional) designs that non-Japanese fans were skeptical of when first-hand images were leaked onto the Internet.

Obsessed?

LoL! I had a weird dream last night; that the subbed version of Gekiranger vs. Boukenger was out!

Granted I have watched the raw version and though I only understood about 30% or so... I wonder why I had this dream? Am I so looking forward to the day TV-Nihon releases it?

Let's Go-On!

The first wave of candy toy for Engine Sentai Go-Onger has arrived! I spent S$15.00 on them without thinking; I must be crazy!

At first, I thought they are the key-chain versions similar to the previous series, but upon opening, I realised that they are just figures with transparent stands.

Well, Bandai Japan must be saving on costs, and replaced metal key-chains with plastic stands. In a way, it's good for display unless you really wanted a key-chain. Haha...

1 -> Go-On Red
2 -> Go-On Blue
3 -> Go-On Yellow
4 -> Go-On Green
5 -> Go-On Black
6 -> Engine-O

Hmm... Engine-O isn't as rare as last year's GekiTouja, but it is not that common either. I only saw like one each at different stores but I didn't buy it. LoL~

Power Rangers for 2009?

It seems that Power Rangers will not be heading in the animated direction yet in 2009. Apparently, it was reported that the pilot failed Disney's expectations... and thus delayed for now.

At the same time, it was stated that Power Rangers will continue as a Live-Action Show for the year 2009. Adapting from Engine Sentai Go-Onger, the production isn't pleased about Talking Zords and will try ways to work around it. Currently, the working title of the series is Power Rangers R.P.M?! (Revolutions Per Minute?!)

(In case you do not know about the Animated Power Rangers news)

Here's some background information: Ron Wasserman (Singer for MMPR and PR S.P.D Themes) spoke to the fans about being contacted by Disney to do music for Animated Power Rangers some time back. Also, Disney has registered the domain www.animatedpowerrangers.com which redirects back to the Jetix Website.

Funny TV-Nihon...

Since they were spoiling us with the fast releases of the first 5 subbed episodes of Engine Sentai Go-Onger, I am surprised that they didn't continue at the expected rate.

Grand Prix 6 is like long due but I am not complaining. Hmm... It's just like Newton's 3rd Law. People expect things to be delivered the way they thought it has always been; kinda like the reaction force.

By the way, also looking forward to Jyuken Sentai Gekiranger vs. Boukenger (Subbed).

Makings of A Hit Single!

LoL~ Just found out that the Go-Onger Opening/Ending Theme Single debuted at #3, and reached #2 on the second day, for Japan's Oricon Chart (Single Daily).

I never knew that the theme song for a kid's show can have so much mass appeal and make it to the top 10 of the Oricon Chart! It goes to show that there are alot of people buying the single!

This is beyond my wildest imagination. It goes to show that it has the capability to defeat even some of the hottest J-pop artists, like Namie Amuro who is charting her 60s70s80s Single at the moment.

Let's Go-On!

Sunday, March 16, 2008

Damn...

I went to CSC in hope of finding MagiPhones but instead there is a GoGo Changer! It's S$59.90, half of what I bought from online. *Curses* If I knew this will happen, I will definitely wait... but then again, Boukenger is my favorite Super Sentai Series so there's the dilemma there...

Another thing, I should have bought DX Engine-O earlier which is $10 cheaper than the price I bought today - The Japanese Yen has raised in value recently.

Sianz... I still need to find 2 MagiPhones (Normal and Silver) quick...

Sentai Hero Series: Go-Onger

I was kinda disappointed with this year's Sentai Hero Toy Line; Bandai Japan seems to be pretty lazy nowadays.

First of all, the SH Figures have no boxes. Personally, I like boxes because it makes storage easier, and at the same time, they protect the toy. Not to mention that attractive boxart also compel people to buy...

Last year, SH Gekiranger disappointed fans because they were close-fisted and did not come with weapons. This time round, you get the side-arm but it is not detachable as it cannot be hold by the close-fisted figures. To make it worse, it's not even fully painted...

Therefore, I might pass these off for now, and if I really want to get them... There's always re-issues by Bandai Asia.

Complains about Bandai America (2)

This is more like an updated response to the post that I first wrote back in 2004.

Bandai America actually did far worse in 2004 and after!

It's not really about the "Made In China" issue. Bandai Japan did had some of their products Made in China as well, yet it still turned out great! Therefore, it's really about the falling standards of Bandai America...

Fair enough, the part on the Wild Zords was pretty hard to tackle. Bandai America never had to deal with releasing individual Deluxe Zords; it was the first time in Japan as well. Plus, Bandai America really wanted parents to get the Megazords as sets so that they can make more money...

I forgot to elaborate the points on loss of paint applications, chrome and other stuff for Wild Force and beyond. While Wild Force Toys retained their metals, they also lost quite a substantial amount of paint details in the process. Ninja Storm was worse because not only are the metal parts are replaced with weak plastics, they still lost the fair bit of paint applications. These are the reasons why American Versions are so undesirable nowadays.

Continue to the Missing Releases List:

[Power Rangers DinoThunder]

-DX Bakuryuu Bachykeronagurus

This Auxiliary Zord (Cephala Zord) in the series is vital and forms the right arm of the Tricemax Megazord formation. How ridiculous of Bandai America to ask kids to attach the Tyranno-Drill instead...

-DX Bakuryuu Brachiosaurus

Firstly, this is not big like the DX Revolver Mammoth. And secondly, kids would love to have this one where it can ferry mini-dinos? Did the amount of chrome of this toy scared the wits out of Bandai America?

[Power Rangers S.P.D.]

No missing releases from this series but the amount of missing paint applications on the Megazords is horrendous! They instantly became trash beside their Japanese Counterparts! And which is why I chose to order the Dekaranger Robo from Japan.

[Power Rangers Mystic Force]

-DX WolKaiser

What could be more ridiculous than this explanation? According to a Bandai America Representative, the DX Centaurus Wolf Megazord will not be released in the United States because it is too evil! Argh!

Boo! Bandai U.K. took its own initiative and released it for the European Market instead of following Bandai America's footsteps.

[Power Rangers Operation Overdrive]

Now this totally deserves a post on its own, as it is by far, the worst Bandai America has ever done for a Power Rangers Toyline! Remember it's 2007.

I'm glad so that I am getting Japanese Versions now. The prices of American Versions here in Singapore have increased so much, due to the current third-party supply chain system, to the point that Japanese Versions are cheaper! Ok, it's because I got to come across Hobby Shops which sold them for direct Japanese Retail Prices with no import charges. Haha.

Migration

Actually, I started a similar blog back in 2004, but I never really get into posting. The address back then was: http://timeforce-hq.blogspot.com. However, I decided to start a new one instead of salvaging the old one, which would be more troublesome.

Welcome!

The rest of the older posts are dated accordingly to the old blog and I have migrated them here as well...you could say, for completeness sake. Plus, I have added some new comments to the old posts...
